Why Speaking Your Truth Online Matters—Even When It's Uncomfortable

There was a time when I hesitated before pressing "post."

As a 55-year-old African-American woman, I've learned to measure my words, read the room, and avoid making others uncomfortable—especially online. But somewhere along the way, I realized that being silent was costing me something far greater than momentary peace: it was costing me my voice.

And I decided I wasn't willing to pay that price anymore.

I started Buffy's Flavorful Journey as a space to share baking tips, gardening joys, and the flavorful bits of everyday life. But as my community grew, so did my desire to speak honestly about what matters to me: politics, race, injustice, womanhood, and the strength it takes to be single, over 50, and still bold enough to say exactly what you mean.

So I started saying it.

Finding My Voice, Publicly

It wasn’t easy at first. The internet is not always a kind place. I’ve been told to do my research, accused of not knowing my own history, and lectured by strangers who assume I haven't lived what I speak about. But here's the thing: I don't need anyone's permission to speak the truth as I know it. None of us do.

When I make a video sharing my opinion on Trump, the economy, or the hypocrisy in our political system, I know I’m opening the door to criticism. But I’m also opening the door to dialogue. And more importantly, I’m letting other women—especially Black women my age—know they are not alone in their thoughts, experiences, and frustrations.

Why Truth-Telling Is Revolutionary

In a world that tries to silence women over 50, truth-telling is a radical act.

We’re supposed to fade into the background, stop making waves, and definitely not call out injustice. But I say no to that. When I speak out, I do it for the young girl who was told to be quiet. I do it for the women who message me saying, "Thank you for saying what I’ve been afraid to say." And yes, I do it for me—because every time I speak my truth, I reclaim another piece of myself.

The Comments That Fuel Me

Not all comments are kind, but many are empowering. When someone says, "I never thought about it that way" or "This really hit home for me," I know I’m doing something right. The negativity no longer has power over me. In fact, it shows me I'm hitting a nerve—and sometimes that's the whole point.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Agreement isn't the goal. The goal is honesty. Authenticity. Connection.

Advice for Others Ready to Speak Up

If you’ve been holding back, worried about what others will say if you speak your mind, let me tell you this: Say it anyway.

Your truth is valuable. Your perspective is needed. Your voice can change the room.

It doesn’t matter how many followers you have. What matters is that you show up as yourself, unfiltered. Because someone out there is waiting to hear exactly what you have to say.

Final Thoughts

Speaking your truth is not always easy—but it’s always worth it. I’m not just baking anymore, I’m building something. A space where bold women are heard, where laughter and truth coexist, and where being yourself is the only rule that matters.

So here I am. Speaking. Sharing. Building.

And I hope you’ll join me.

All the Best to You and Yours!
